How to dress your child in the harsh winter cold ❄️
Finnish winters can surprise with harsh frosts, but with the right clothing, outdoor activities are safe and comfortable for children of all ages. Layering, breathable materials and the right size of clothing are key. It is a good idea to choose down or other highly insulating materials for outdoor activities so that outdoor activities can be successful even in -30c. You can always add layers of clothing if necessary! Also remember that the less a child moves, the more susceptible they are to freezing. We have compiled the most important tips for winter clothing by age group.
Babies and toddlers – warmth and protection without moving
Babies don't move much outside, so they need especially good thermal insulation.
-Layering: A thin merino wool base layer, a fleece or wool midlayer and a warm padded or wool overall on top.
-Head, hands and feet: Warm socks, wool socks and a well-fitting hat. It is advisable to protect the neck with a wool collar or use a balaclava that protects the neck.
-Strollers: Make use of a thermal bag or blanket and remember that a child in a stroller often needs one more layer than a moving child.
-Avoid sweating: Overdressing can cause moisture, which cools the child. You can easily check the child's temperature by touching the child's neck. If it is sweaty or cold, the child's clothing should be changed!
Daycare and play-age children - warm but suitable for movement
Play-age children move a lot, so their clothing should be warm but flexible.
-Base layer: Merino wool is an excellent choice, as it warms even when wet.
-Midlayer: Fleece or wool provides additional warmth in severe frosts.
-Outerwear: Well-insulated padded overalls or a padded jacket and trousers.
-Accessories: Warm mittens (preferably waterproof), wool socks and proper winter shoes.
-Easy to wear: Daycare values clothes that the child can learn to put on themselves.
Schoolchildren – functionality and comfort
Older children move independently and spend time outdoors in different ways.
-Dressing in layers: A thin base layer, a warm middle layer and a weatherproof outer layer. Schoolchildren often already have a clear opinion about the appearance of their clothes. For example, Reima has narrower padded trousers (Sild) and black padded jackets that are popular with schoolchildren.
-Considering movement: It often gets warm on the way to school and during breaks, so breathable materials are important.
-Headwear and neck: A beanie and neck warmer protect against the cold without hindering movement.
-Shoes and socks: Warm, but not too tight shoes – the air space in the shoe adds warmth. For socks, it is good to prefer thin socks containing wool.
Remember these for all age groups:
Check the weather and wind chill before going out
Favour natural materials, such as wool and merino wool
Dry and clean clothes and the right size keep you warmer than damp or clothes that are too small or big.
Dressed correctly, a winter day is full of joy, play and fresh air – despite the frost!
